Where is Curacao?

The Island of Curaçao formally, is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands with approximate area of 444 km ².

It is located in the southern Caribbean Sea, about 50 km from the western coast of Venezuela, and belongs to the Leeward Islands, together with its neighboring islands of Aruba and Bonaire. Until 2010 was part of the Netherlands Antilles.

Curacao in the southeast includes the small uninhabited islet called Klein Curaçao (Dutch that means Little Curacao). Like most Caribbean islands, Curaçao is located in the Intertropical Zone and is aligned from northwest to southeast, so the northern shores are the Windward, receiving directly the effects of the trade winds, while the southern coast are the Leeward, that means they have their backs to the wind and, consequently, where the sea is in perpetual calm.

The image of the erosion on the north coast shows the effects of the trade winds, although not very strong, winds blowing throughout the year, most strongly in the afternoon. This wave moves into the limestone shelf of the northern coast, which have opened caves, natural bridges and small valleys formed by the collapse of the roofs in ancient caves elongated.

The city of Willemstad is the main port and capital of the island, in addition to being also of the Netherlands Antilles. His area historical city center and port, were declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. It is famous for the so-called Curaçao liqueur is made from the rind of the oranges of the island, and celebrate one of the most famous Carnival in the Caribbean.

Since this island an Island Territory of the Netherlands Antilles, part of the Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union. It settled the major naval installations in the Royal Navy of the Netherlands in the Caribbean Sea, and provides logistical support to NATO in the region. Additionally, in its territory is in operation since 1999, a Forward Operating Base Southern Command of the United States.
